A rare masterpiece within his ‘postcard’ series, Nandalal Bose’s painting captures the fluid movements of a cow with her calf, possibly soon after calving, given its size. The play of dense black against lighter tones, the expression in the cow’s eye, and the faltering movements of the calf celebrate the relationship between living creatures. Bose began observing nature closely in his position as principal of the art department in Santiniketan, often noting details by way of pen and ink drawings.
