The women in Nandalal Bose’s art were accorded respect even if they were shown in intimate settings. Bose’s gaze at the woman in this Untitled work from the 1940s is decidedly asexual, and despite the curves and the sensuousness on display, the woman is a representation of elegant beauty rather than sexual objectification, rendered with dignity. The overall softness of the painting, created impeccably through Bose’s gentle brushstrokes, adds to the overall mystique of the figure, who, though ordinary, becomes extraordinary in Bose’s art.
