This 1948 ‘postcard’ was made at a time when Nandalal Bose, as the head of the department of Kala Bhavana, would carry on his person small sheets of paper on which he made drawings of great erudition that documented life in the countryside of Santiniketan. These served as an exercise for his hands and eyes, the artist perfecting the lines with the paintbrush daily. This Untitled landscape, resembling ‘Khoai’ (tiny hills made of laterite soil) of Santiniketan, reveals how Bose made visual aide-memoires that eventually became timeless and a big draw for art collectors.
