Nandalal Bose adds depth and perspective from his vantage point at a windowsill in this charming ‘postcard’ that allows him to look out at goings on outside the room. A busy neighbourhood that is clearly not Santiniketan, nor perhaps the metropolis of Calcutta, it consists of houses adjacent to a road which can be glimpsed below, but is also indicated with its streetlights and cover of trees. Built up graffiti-style with scribbles and lines, Bose fills up the entire space with houses inhabited by people who walk between the buildings or can be seen behind windows or on terraces—a vicarious vignette of life in some small town during the course of the day.
