M. F. Husain’s art was tied to imagining a secular modern India in a visual language that represented the country’s ‘composite culture’ in a rich mosaic of colours. The Untitled head, rendered in thick impasto, seems to belong to the ’60s—a period of emotional turmoil for the artist, owing to the horrors he witnessed during the time of the Indo-Pak war. Subtle strokes in grey and brown come together to create the outline of a possibly turbaned man with a moustache, and around his neck is a tawiz or an amulet.
