A trained painter known for his wide range of prints—lithographs, intaglio prints, collographs, etc.—Lalu Prasad Shaw fluctuated between abstraction as a printmaker and the figurative style of a miniaturist as a painter. It’s in the style of the Mughal miniatures that he makes this Untitled (Portrait) work, especially evident in the flat background. The portrait seems to be of a young Muslim woman who is not hesitant at throwing back the veil of her burqa to look straight into the eyes of the beholder.
