Faintly similar to German abstractionism of the early twentieth century, this Untitled collograph by Lalu Prasad Shaw—who made printmaking his lifelong affair after graduating in painting though he practiced the latter too with equal felicity—shows his easy understanding of modernism early in his career. Abstraction is what he explored through his prints (and figuration in paintings) and this work creates an intricate textural landscape with a paper collograph. The red semi-circle appears like a rising sun on a landscape of regular geological forms, achieved by using paper punched with holes.
