Lalu Prasad Shaw’s tryst with printmaking began soon after his graduation in painting from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta. He continued to work in both the mediums though he taught printmaking at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, till his retirement. He worked extensively in intaglio, creating highly abstract works such as this one. Through gradations in black and white, Shaw here creates an image that has duality at its core where every aspect is open to more than one interpretation. Is it a dark night overhanging an otherwise beautiful landscape, or daybreak piercing through inky darkness?
