Belonging to the neo-Bengal School, Biswanath Mukerji’s art created a fine balance between modernism and the rich art traditions of India, combining both with a flair, ease and finesse. Featured here is Mukerji’s interpretation of Shiva, the destroyer of the universe, presented in the phallus (lingam) form, revered and worshipped by the Hindus. The lingam in the painting shows trinetra or the third eye of Shiva representing the eye of wisdom along with the sandalwood tilak that is typically applied by Shiva’s devotees.
