Those even faintly familiar with Rabin Mondal through his most well-known works would instantly recognise his signature figures in Family. Yet, this is not a common work from Mondal’s repertoire as it is a collage, a medium that he did not work in prolifically. In the picture plane, the three primitivist figures of a man, woman and child are juxtaposed with images of monuments and fragments of buildings in a composition that indicates movement; this could be a picture from the family’s travel album. In all, it becomes a rare Mondal work.
