One might wonder where Rabin Mondal’s faces come from—did he know these people, or just happen to meet or observe them, or did he use his imagination coupled with the pain that he witnessed around him? For these faces look tormented and aged, bearing the burden of an unhappy past and an equally challenging present. Painted in bold brushstrokes, the bindi-wearing figure in this Untitled painting with haunted eyes and sagging skin reflects the ravages of time and the loss of loved ones.
