Awaiting Master’s Arrival is a masterful work from Rabin Mondal’s stable of paintings on kings and queens, where a tragic looking figure seated on the ground beside a throne looks fevered in his paranoia and fear. He is troubled but also covetous and ambitious, seen in his protective grasp of the chair leg, steeling himself against opposition and used to overcoming obstacles with sheer will. He is evidently another claimant to the throne—cursed, isolated, and yet bound by his own needs.
