Having made the journey from landscapes and still-lifes, Rabin Mondal found himself drawn to the possibility of working in the abstract. Though it was a relatively short phase, Mondal experimented with the use of symbols, on display in this canvas. These were not interpretive in the normal course, merely suggestive of something with an ancient past. In this, excavational remains coloured his choice, suggestive of mysteries and secrets. Eventually, Mondal would use similar markings over his figures, thereby eliminating the abstract from his body of work.
