The figures in Rabin Mondal’s art, particularly those seen together as couples, in threes, or as part of a larger group, are created from a perspective of unearthing something larger in the act of relationships. The findings are rarely—or never—pleasant. Figures in Dark may appear together but they are far from being content. On the contrary, they are complicit in their misery and dissatisfaction. Rabin Mondal’s indictment of society is cruel but, in his eyes, justified. He sees no room for love or affection.
