Painted paper mache and plaster of paris on wooden base
Dhanraj Bhagat, a graduate of Lahore’s Mayo College of Art, worked in clay initially but after settling in Delhi post-Partition, he started experimenting with other media that resonated better with his ideas. His forms were always lyrical as evident in this Untitled work, even though they conveyed distraught emotions born out of enduring the Partition. In this work, two figures support several others, in what can be an allegory to human generosity when faced with the displacement and long trek to the ‘right’ side of the border in 1947-48.
