Even though this work is Untitled, grief is the sentiment it conveys most emphatically with the head of the seated woman thrown back and the chest heaving to vent despair. Dhanraj Bhagat, who grew up in Lahore and migrated to Delhi after the Partition, essayed the epochal event often in his sculptures, as was the case with most artists of his generation who had personally endured the events of 1947. However, it was the lyricism of his construction—irrespective of the material he employed to create sculptures—that stood out, as evident in the effortless sweep of the torso of the figure.
