New Delhi-based Shobha Broota believes in paring things down to their very essence. What remains on the canvas through this process of elimination ultimately are mere lines, some movements and a few circles. In Homage to Sri Lanka II, Broota encapsulates the vitality of the tropical island, including its recent history of civil strife, through a large circle on a fiery red background. The luminosity of the red plane is most intense at the centre, diffusing gradually as the eye travels outwards. The circle, or the wheel of life, turns incessantly, gaining experiences and shedding memories as it moves forward.
