Shobha Broota, who secured a diploma from the College of Art, New Delhi, in 1964, made portraits, figurative and abstract paintings and prints before arriving at her philosophical, meditative works of art. She often uses a geometric grid to build a central dot into a pattern, which in this work, is a set of concentric circles. Here, the grey picture plane carries punctured semi-circles in one half, reflecting solidly in the other. Evoking rhythmic serenity, the work draws the eye from outside to the centre where the white light guides the viewer to another realm that lies beyond reality.
