This Untitled work is an early exploration of the abstract by Shobha Broota—one of India’s finest abstractionists—which would eventually lead to her signature colour field works. The concept of colour space as a field of energy that characterises her mature stage begins to take shape in canvases such as this, where two circles and one semi-circle in yellow are held together by a brown, textured vertical line. This work is framed and abstraction still has some form, which would eventually make way for pure abstraction through planes of colour pulsating with the energy of life force.
