Self is an example of how S. G. Vasudev’s art has been intuitive, and how his sensitivity to nature, culture and history has led him to create a world of his own on his canvases. In many of his works, including this ‘self-portrait’, viewers get an impression of figures almost floating, adding to a sense of mystery to his work. The lyricism of lines and texture composition, also seen in Self, one of the many strong points of the Madras Group, is seen in many of Vasudev’s paintings.
