Shades of bright colours form Sakti Burman’s favourite palette. While he lived far away in France, bright colours evoked the nostalgia of India for him, signifying the energy of her people and ritualistic fervour. In his paintings, Burman brings together, somewhat disconcertingly, but also delightfully, people and places, gods and saints, family, neighbours and glimpsed strangers, building up a happy never-never land of imagination. So many elements and genres seem to be fused and camouflaged here, including the female protagonist and what resembles a still-life arrangement.
