Biblical themes and Christian iconography have fascinated Indian modernists and many artists have imbibed its essence through their personal visual vocabulary. Sakti Burman creates in this impressive painting from the Sixties his version of Christ with his unique ‘marbling’ technique that he has applied throughout his career. Burman’s Christ may not bear resemblance to the typical image of the iconic figure but still shows the expression of sadness and surrender on the bloodied face.
