In what appears to be a self-portrait, this Untitled work is, quite possibly, an ode to G. R. Santosh’s life-altering journey to Amarnath in the 1960s. It is painted in a style that he developed and mastered over the years—framing the canvas and building up the image from there, and using colours strategically to bring forth an incomparable effect of light. In doing so, Santosh creates a meditative figure. We see the Himalayan range in the background while the river is represented in the stylised imagery of the Ganga flowing from Lord Shiva’s matted locks.
