The artist S. H. Raza came across G. R. Santosh in the early 1950s in Srinagar, at the time painting scenic landscapes of Kashmir for tourists to carry back with them. He urged Santosh to train under N. S. Bendre in Baroda, even arranging a scholarship for him. It was here that Santosh began to paint figures in a cubist style popularised by Bendre. In this painting, the people and landscape that form the composition are drawn from Kashmir, his lifelong subject and muse.
