In the decades that he painted the Bird, Mountain and Tree series, J. Swaminathan found a new sense of freedom. Sanstuti, which means ‘praise’, epitomises how colour was no longer tied to a formal order or composition but became integral to what the artist wanted to convey. Bringing together all the three motifs—bird, tree, and mountain—Swaminathan conveys in Sanstuti a brand new negotiation, the imagery allowing him to explore pictorial possibilities in the expansive space that he fills vividly with flat paint.
