Known for his landscapes in black-and-white in which he excelled and of which this Untitled watercolour is proof, Prosanto Roy’s artistic journey is particularly interesting in the context of Indian modern art, especially given that he benefitted from working and observing the Tagore family closely. From Abanindranath Tagore he acquired his delicate touch in wash paintings while Gaganendranath Tagore introduced him to cubism. Santiniketan presented him with a new definition of nationalism in art and Roy amalgamated all these styles diligently in his career.
