Though Jeram Patel was academically trained at Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, his oeuvre is best defined by works in which he used a blowtorch to burn wood to create amorphous shapes. These burnt wood reliefs became his most significant contributiuon to abstract art in the 1960s and gave him a new visual identity and earned him a unique place in the world of Indian modern art. This Untitled blowtorch work creates an abstract landscape highlighted with the use of iron nails to recreate, possibly, a bird’s-eye view of a cityscape at night.
