Jeram Patel was one of the few artists who formulated a new visual identity and method of abstraction for Indian art. His images made a clean break from realism but went beyond surrealism as well. His iconic black strokes, as in this Untitled work, reveal his fascination with the hidden, the interior, and give the impression of a Rorschach ink blot. Seen from a distance, this black anthropomorphic form appears to be moving across the paper. Within it, we can sense a primeval world, of things hidden below a surface or a calm exterior.
