In the course of his artistic career, A. H. Müller attained success as a realist painter, especially for his watercolour works. While he enjoyed royal patronage, he travelled extensively and painted the common people whom he encountered. In Vasudev (Devotee), the artist paints the central figure with remarkable finesse, even while paying attention to the other figures and details in the background—an old man squatting, a woman entering a temple’s premises, and the lush green backdrop with an imposing banyan tree positioned on top of a red ochre mound.
