Known to paint historical episodes as well as in the Orientalist tradition, A. H. Muller displayed a sense of spontaneity on his many excursions through India when he would paint scenes and people in front of him. While many of his wanderings took him through the countryside, his Himalayan interludes are delightful for the way he places his figures forefront with peaks framing them—here, a shepherdess who seems to have wandered away from her flock to admire the views just as we do.
