A splendid history painter, A. H. Muller was in popular demand by members of royal families—Bikaner and Jodhpur in particular—but one could hardly associate him with the royal sport of shikar or tiger hunting. Here, Muller seems to have opted for the more viable option of painting a tiger instead. Known for his realistic style of painting, he captures here a tiger resting in its natural environment making one wonder how he came about the sight. Whatever his source of imagery, he has captured the tiger’s essential spirit of watchfulness even as it relaxes in a glade.
