A musician—he played the violin and learnt sitar from Pandit Ravi Shankar for three years—and a painter, Khemraj’s art was liberated from the canons of Western or Eastern art as he created a style that fused the two in a refreshingly unconventional language. Untitled (Charpai) belongs to one of Khemraj’s most loved series, the origins of which lay in his own life of bringing home a bride, of finding love, and living a life whose delightful humdrumness was best exemplified by a string cot.
