P. Khemraj’s Surya series, conceived and painted in Hong Kong for an exhibition at Alliance Française, featured an elliptical construct on the upper half of the painted surface, leaving the lower portion for figurative expression. Spatially, the abstract segment suggests a space outside one’s home—a neighbourhood, a city, country—while the macro image in the lower segment reflects a more personal universe, one complete with views of homes from the windows of terraces and roofs, a carpet and cushion to lie on.
