Indra Dugar trained under his father, Hirachand Dugar—who was one of the earliest students of Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan—to become a significant landscape watercolourist. Considerably lesser known is his keen eye in observing nature and his studies of flowers in the oriental tradition—of which this painting of poppy flowers is an excellent example. Though Dugar defied influences of the prevalent popular art styles and charted his own course, he shows his dexterity in painting in the Bengal School style in this work with the delicate rendition of the lovely pink blooms.
