Though Indra Dugar built his reputation as a watercolour landscapist, he created works in oil as well, even if rarely. This oil is a departure in the theme too as it focuses on the city and not outside of it, which was his preferred subject for most of his career. This Untitled work distinctly shows north Calcutta, which hasn’t much changed today despite half-a-century since this painting was made. The evening has advanced considerably as the lights are out or dimmed in most of the houses, with only the corner convenience store brightly-lit up for late shoppers.
