Indra Dugar’s peripatetic ways saw him spending time in Bihar, among other places, tracing the Buddha’s life and journey, and painting several landscapes. Of these, many were devoted to Rajgir, an ancient city where both Mahavira and Gautam Buddha had preached in the sixth and fifth century B.C.; it also finds mention in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. In this monochromatic watercolour, Dugar focusses on clouds gathering over the seven hills that surround Rajgir. The scale of the serene landscape helps in highlighting the vastness of the vista, with humans appearing as specks on the road below in the foreground.
