Madan Lal Gupta counts Ramkinkar Baij and Sankho Chaudhuri—both pioneering modernist sculptors—as major influences on his art and his practice has borne it out completely. Gupta has experimented extensively with mediums—from traditional stone, iron and bronze to brick and fibreglass, creating modernist works such as this Untitled one. The cylindrical block carries an amphitheatre on top encircled by a boundary with one interruption. Its centre is filled with people, who are perhaps, in an assembly or staging a performance. The depth of the cylinder denotes the roots of the people that go very deep.
