If there is one object that comes closest to symbolising power, it is the chair. Whether the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s chair installation or Mozambican artist Goncalo Mabunda’s chairs made of weapons, this piece of furniture makes a pithy comment as a work of art. Madan Lal Gupta’s bronze work, Lotus Chair, is a replica of the popular chair of moulded plastic used by all classes in India but comes with flowers embedded on the seat, which render it rather unusable, perhaps.
