Madan Lal Gupta, who teaches sculpture at Banaras Hindu University, pays respect to one of the several revered spots of the holy city he calls home through this modernist rust iron work. Lolark Kund refers to the fifty-feet deep Lolark water tank that is thronged by devotees daily to expiate their sins by sprinkling themselves with its holy water. According to the Skand Purana, Lord Shiva sent Lord Surya to Kashi (Varanasi) to spread purity, and the reflection of the sun’s rays in the tank is an assurance of divine powers in its waters.
