Born and brought up in Lalganj of Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, Madan Lal Gupta’s works often recall his childhood fascination for nature when he loved ambling through the village fields and forests, and spend time by the ponds and lakes. The title of this rust iron work, Jal Sarovar, alludes to a water reservoir the likes of which abound in rural India. A highly modernist work, it cleverly uses slight depression in the centre of the iron plate and minimalist pinches along the edge of the depression to create a water reservoir surrounded by groves of trees.
