Madan Lal Gupta, who studied sculpture at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; M. S. University, Baroda; and Tama Art University, Tokyo, has a constantly evolving practice in which he uses a variety of material to create modernist works, such as this Untitled bronze. A bloom sprouts up from a caged structure, the flatness of the cage in stark contrast to the textured, patinated look of the stalk on top of which rests a tiny bloom. Gupta’s practise has for long been informed by nature, a childhood fascination that he revisits often.
