In Greek mythology, Adonis is the god of beauty, fertility and permanent renewal. Subba Ghosh’s Adonis, however, like many of his other prints, isn’t easy to view. Ghosh creates in this narrative a dishevelled-looking man who, though harmless, seems sinister to look at. His demeanour is what one would term ‘shady’ what with his pants undone, his clothes in disarray along with other elements and figures, some of them suggesting sexual connotations. Curiously, a unicorn seems to float in the clouds—possibly the artist’s ode to the Greek god?
