Rajendra Dhawan’s dry brush technique resulted in works that have been described as ‘quiet’ and ‘reluctant’, just like the man that he was. His choice of palette was muted that accentuated the meditative quality of his works. Even when he used sharp colours such as red and blue—as in this Untitled oil—he pared down the tone to an unobtrusive hue. This work evokes a frosted landscape encircled by a deep forest beyond which thrives life. It is hard to ignore the simile that fits well with the winter cityscape of Paris, which he made his eventual home.
