Rajendra Dhawan turned to abstraction right at the start of his career and found easy acceptance in Paris where he went to study in 1970 at the École des Beaux-Arts, eventually making it his home. Often compared to works by V. S. Gaitonde for their lyrical and mystical quality, Dhawan’s canvases came to be known for his soft palette that invited the viewer to experience a higher realm instead of making any loud statement on contemporary topics. Viewers often discerned earthy, meditative landscapes in his works, which Dhawan left for them to interpret as they wished.
