Rajendra Dhawan was often described as an artist who was ‘reclusive’, sometimes even ‘reluctant’, owing to how little he said, including in his communication through art. His paintings, such as this Untitled oil on cloth, are quiet, holding their secrets close even while letting us engage with an intense internal landscape. Dhawan, who studied at the School of Art, New Delhi, decided to settle and work in Paris, creating works which embodied a calm, quiet silence. Though marked by sombre colours, there was little of the turbulence of a storm or upheaval in his paintings.
