Rajendra Dhawan was a man of few words, and his art too reflected his personality in not being loud, garish or verbose. A metaphysical aspect was inherent in his works throughout his career, which made his oeuvre experiential. With his understated palette, strokes that melded into the atmosphere, and highlights that served to put the background in perspective and not stand out of it—all of which characterise this Untitled oil—Dhawan paid homage to the muted shades of Europe that he called home; he arrived in Paris in 1970 to study, where he eventually settled.
