A work from the early years of Biren De’s career, Untitled 34 shows the influence of cubism that many artists adopted in India as a result of direct exposure to European art or through the works of Indian seniors practicing the style, such as N. S. Bendre. The oval of the girl’s face in the work resembles the syntax of George Keyt’s cubist language. By the looks of it, she is a Baul singer playing her one-string instrument and evidently lost in singing while she slowly ambles her way through the village fields.
