This crayon work by Biren De is from the early phase of his career when he was still practicing lyrical figuration. A group of men seem to be enjoying themselves after a hard day’s work in the fields with some singing and dancing—one of them is caught in a vigorous movement, while a younger one beats the drum. The fluid lines of the figures carry in them seeds of De’s future oeuvre when form would dissolve completely, making way for tantric abstraction.
