A chief protagonist of the neo-tantra movement that created a parallel stream of modern art in India, Biren De created dramatic paintings that marked a shift in his career as a hitherto figurative painter. The most remarkable aspect of his tantric abstractionism was the use of colour to denote energy; his colour energy fields marked a turning point in the language of abstraction in India. This genre of works, like the Untitled oil under consideration, comprised bright colour bands cocooning an incandescent centre almost impossible to view due to the piercing, penetrating light.
