Oil and plaster of paris on canvas pasted on canvas
By the late 1950s-early 1960s, form had dissolved completely in the art of the erstwhile figurative artist, Biren De. However, his well-known neo-tantric paintings made on colour energy fields were still some time ahead in the future. The Untitled work in consideration here comes from this in-between phase of the artist’s career. An amorphous brown form fills up the picture plane longitudinally from top to bottom, driving a wedge in the dark swathes of brown in the background. Hints of green allude to vegetation on a mountain that rises up the vast riverine plains.
